There has been a lot of discussion in the local press and across social media recently so we thought we’d do a bit of a deep dive on the local crime landscape in Weybridge.
In September 2019 170 individual crimes were reported in Weybridge – this is the highest number of crimes reported in a single month during 2019.
Surrey Police records are available from October 2016 and during that 36 month period monthly reported crime has been higher on only 5 other occasions:
November 2018 : 206 crimes reported
July 2018 : 195 crimes reported
June 2018 : 189 crimes reported
December 2017 : 183 crimes reported
October 2017 : 173 crimes reported

The trendline indicates that since October 2016 there has been a very slight increase in the number of reported crimes with the average number of crime reports at 152 per month.
Starting with the most highly reported crime in Weybridge during September 2019
The Surrey Police category definition is:
“Violence and sexual offences
Includes offences against the person such as common assaults, Grievous Bodily Harm and sexual offences.”
From a personal point of view I don’t quite understand why a ‘common assault’ and ‘sexual offences’ are bucketed into the same category and believe it causes a distortion of the real picture – how are we to know the ration of each in the final figure presented below?
38 cases of Violence & Sexual Offences were reported in Weybridge during September 2019.
Surrey Police records are available from October 2016 and during that 36 month period monthly reported crime has been higher on only 4 other occasions:
March 2019 : 38
November 2018 : 41
July 2018 : 49
December 2017 : 46
Violence & Sexual Offences crime reports since October 2016 are clearly trending up (see red trend line) – with a big spike in December 2017 (Christmas?) and July 2018 (World Cup?)

The Surrey Police category definition is:
“Anti-social behaviour
Includes personal, environmental and nuisance anti-social behaviour.”
In September 2019 there were 26 incidents of Anti Social Behaviour reported to Surrey Police.
There is always the general feeling that this is getting worse – lets see what the reported figures bear out – though looking at the definitions it’s clear there may be a crossover with ‘Public Order Offences‘ – of which there were 17 reported incidents in September 2019.
Interestingly the 26 reports of ASB in September represent one of the lowest number of incidents since October 2016 – the earliest date figures are available from.
And you can see reports of Anti Social Behaviour are strongly trending downwards. But again with a big spike in June and July 2018.
The Surrey Police category definition is:
“Public order
Includes offences which cause fear, alarm or distress.”
You can see that there may be a crossover with certain elements of behaviour being considered as ASB but in legal terms falling under the Public Order offence category.
In September 2019 there were 17 Public Order offences reported to Surrey Police.
Since October 2016 this number has only been higher on 4 other occasions:
July 2019 : 18
May 2019 : 19
November 2019 : 18
June 2018 : 26
Reported of Public Order Offences is slightly trending up but again there’s that spike across June and July 2018 as shown in the previous graphs.
The Surrey Police category definition is:
“Burglary
Includes offences where a person enters a house or other building with the intention of stealing.”
Burglary is another crime that on the face of it seems to be on the increase. What do the reported figures tell us?
In September 2019 there were 15 reported burglaries in Weybridge.
Looking at the trending data whilst the numbers of burglaries have significantly reduced in 2019 this does represent the second highest recorded figure of 2019.
February 2019 : 16
The numbers of reported burglaries have trended downwards but as previously mentioned last months was the second highest figure this year.
I have to say that this section absolutely staggered me.
Of 1490 reported crimes (not including ASB) since October 2018:
Let that sink in : 29 suspects charged. Out of 1490 reported crimes.
That’s less than 2%.
